Propecia (Finasteride)

Propecia is a type of medicine that’s prescribed to treat male-pattern hair loss. It contains 1mg of the active ingredient, finasteride.

Propecia is only available privately, and not on the NHS. This is because hair loss treatment is classed as cosmetic rather than medically necessary. However, with online prescribing services such as iMeds UK, you can now buy Propecia without needing a face to face consultation with a private GP. Simply complete a consultation form for hair loss, and choose your treatment. This will then be sent to one of our GMC-registered doctors for review. If approved, your Propecia will be dispensed and shipped from our partner pharmacy.

Although androgenetic alopecia isn’t a life threatening condition, many men find that it affects their self-esteem, and turn to treatments such as Propecia to restore some confidence.

Prices start from £49.99 for 28 tablets

What is Propecia?

Propecia is the branded version of 1mg finasteride. It’s prescribed to treat male-pattern hair loss, or androgenetic alopecia.

Finasteride was originally prescribed to treat prostate issues, but it was found that in smaller doses, it could help to reverse the balding process that many men experience.

Although male-pattern hair loss is most common in men over 40, it can happen to males of any age. In most cases, androgenetic alopecia is due to the amount of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) produced in the body. DHT is responsible for the miniaturisation of hair follicles, causing hair to appear thinner until the follicles become too small for anything to grow through them at all.

Propecia is classed as a DHT-blocker. It works by reducing levels of dihydrotestosterone in the body, meaning that follicles can open up again – allowing hair to grow through.

Propecia can also be used alongside Regaine for Men – a daily foam which contains the active ingredient, minoxidil. As these two hair growth treatments work in different ways, they’re safe to use in conjunction with each other. However, you should first check whether it’s safe for you to take Regaine, as it may not be suitable for everyone.

Is Propecia safe?

Propecia is safe for most men with hair loss, but there are some cautions you should know about before you start taking it. Because of finasteride’s ability to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia, it may not be suitable for some men.

Propecia is not safe for the following groups of people:

  • Women
  • Those allergic to finasteride
  • Those already taking finasteride or dutasteride for prostate issues

If you do belong to any of the groups above, you should not buy propecia, and instead ask your doctor for advice on alternative treatments for male-pattern hair loss.

You should also avoid taking Propecia if you’re due to have a PSA (prostate-specific antigen) test, as the drug can affect the results.

It’s important to keep your propecia tablets away from any pregnant woman, not allowing them to come into contact with it as it may affect the unborn baby.

Finasteride side effects

Although most men are able to take propecia without experiencing adverse effects, it’s important to acknowledge that it is a prescription medication and therefore has the ability to cause side effects.

MSome of the most commonly reported finasteride side effects include:

  • Impotence/erectile dysfunction
  • Reduced sex drive (libido)
  • Ejaculation issues
  • Breast tenderness
  • Enlarged breasts
  • Palpitations
  • Testicle pain
  • Blood in semen
  • Change in liver function
  • Infertility
  • Anxiety

Propecia may also cause feelings of depression in some men. If you notice this, stop taking the hair growth treatment and make an appointment to see your doctor, as this can be a very serious side effect.

In some men, Propecia can also trigger an allergic reaction. You may notice a skin rash, itching, or in severe cases, difficulty breathing alongside swelling of the throat and face. In this case, you should immediately stop taking Propecia and call an ambulance.

How long does finasteride take to work?

Finasteride and Propecia aren’t overnight solutions to hair loss, and could take several months for you to notice a difference. Because of the way Propecia works in your body, levels of DHT need to be lowered enough for hair follicles to expand and allow hair growth. This may take some time to achieve, and hair growth is naturally a slow process on its own.

Don’t get disheartened if you don’t see results within the first month of taking finasteride, as many men find that they only start to notice an improvement around 3-4 months in. However, it may take up to nine months for you to see the full effects of Propecia for hair growth.

Propecia for women

Propecia should not be taken by women, especially those of childbearing age. Propecia may have adverse effects on the genitals of unborn males, so if a woman taking finasteride becomes pregnant, it may affect the child.

If you’re a woman and struggling with female-pattern hair loss, you may want to try Regaine for Women – a topical minoxidil foam that’s proven to promote hair regrowth.

Hair loss treatment

iMeds UK offers a variety of hair loss treatments, from DHT blockers such as propecia, finasteride, and dutasteride, to topical treatments such as Regaine for Men.

Hair loss treatment is a popular option for men suffering with androgenetic alopecia, as thinning or balding hair can affect self-esteem and self-image.

Many of the hair loss treatments we offer are prescription medicines, so it’s important to not exceed the stated dose.

Propecia cost

Propecia from iMeds UK costs £49.99 for 28 tablets, which should last a month. However, you may be able to save money by purchasing larger packs. For example, if you know you need 3 months’ worth of Propecia, it will cost less in the long run to buy the pack of 84 tablets, rather than ordering 28 tablets each month.
