Details

What is Finasteride and what does it do?

Finasteride is a tablet indicated for the treatment of pattern baldness in men, also known as androgenetic alopecia. It contains the active ingredient with the same name, which is a type of 5-alpha reductase inhibitor.

Finasteride slows down hair loss by decreasing the levels of DHT in the scalp, which is a hormone closely linked to thinning of the hair.

When is Finasteride prescribed?

Finasteride may be prescribed to men who suffer from the early stages of male pattern baldness, also known as androgenetic alopecia. Even though male pattern baldness does not pose a risk your health, many men choose to seek treatment for the condition.

Finasteride tablets are only indicated for use in adult men over the age of 18. As well as being used to prevent further hair loss, this medication can also encourage and increase hair growth on the scalp.

Is Finasteride suitable for my condition?

Finasteride may be suitable if you suffer from mild to moderate hair loss due to male pattern baldness. The condition is characterised by a receding hairline, followed by thinning of the hair on the crown of the scalp and temples.

Please note, Finasteride will not regrow hair if you suffer from complete hair loss. Certain medicines and conditions may affect the suitability of this treatment.

Do not use Finasteride if any of the below applies to you:

  • You are a woman
  • You are a man under the age of 18
  • You are allergic to finasteride or any of the other ingredients listed in the patient information leaflet
  • You are already taking Finasteride or Dutasteride to treat prostate problems

What is the recommended dosage of Finasteride?

You should follow the doctor’s instructions on how to take this medicine. The doses outlined below is for your reference only. The tablets should be swallowed whole with a drink of water. Do not crush or chew the tablets.

The recommended dose is one tablet (1mg) daily. Keep taking Finasteride for as long as instructed by the doctor.

Please note, there is no evidence to suggest that an increased dose will increase the efficacy of this treatment. Taking more of this medication than you are meant to puts you at greater risk of experiencing side effects.

Does Finasteride cause any side effects?

All medicines, including Finasteride, are capable of causing side effects. However, not everyone gets them.

It is important that you read through the section about side effects in the patient information leaflet before you start taking Finasteride. This will help you to spot any signs of an allergic reaction should you get one. You should stop using Finasteride and contact your doctor or nearest hospital emergency department if you do experience allergic reaction symptoms.

Finasteride may cause the below side effects, though they are all considered uncommon:

  • Breast swelling or tenderness
  • Heart palpitations
  • Pain in the testicles
  • Depressed mood
  • Less desire to have sex
  • Difficulty having an erection
  • Fast heart beat

Please note, the above is not a complete list of possible side effects. Consult your GP immediately if you notice any changes in your breast tissue, such as lumps, pain or nipple discharge.

Can I reduce the risk of getting side effects?

Yes, you can reduce the risk of experiencing side effects by letting our doctors know about any medical conditions you may have and any medicines you may take. This will help you avoid side effects related to drug interaction. Please include this information in the online medical questionnaire.

Finasteride for women

As mentioned above, Finasteride is designed for use exclusively by men. It has been established that this medicine is ineffective in treatment hair loss in women and if a woman is pregnant, Finasteride could in fact cause complications.

If you are a woman and you are looking for treatment for hair loss. Then there are other medications in the market which are suited for this purpose. One particular example is Regaine for Women, which like Finasteride is also available to order online from iMeds.
