CBD products contain an element of the cannabis plant which has exploded in popularity in recent years. It is safe and legal to take and a lot of people take it because they believe it can provide health benefits both physically and mentally. While not currently sold as a treatment for any condition, CBD is popularly used as a food supplement and the component can even be infused into other types of products like skin balms.

"CBD refers to cannabidiol – a part of the cannabis plant which is believed to provide certain health benefits. CBD is ultimately not considered a medical product, but it can be taken in many forms and has become very popular. Most types of CBD products are considered food supplements, but some people who have CBD oil have claimed to enjoy certain health benefits from taking it. If you think CBD could help you, then you can consult your doctor or pharmacist first to be sure it’s safe for you to try."
What is CBD oil?
CBD oil is an element from hemp plants which has become popularly sold as a food supplement in recent years. CBD stands for cannabidiol and can be found in a vast range of products such as oil drops, e-liquid, capsules, drinks, chocolates and even skin balm.
What benefits can CBD bring?
While it is not officially sold as a treatment for any condition, there are many who claim that taking CBD can bring health benefits. CBD has the potential to relieve certain symptoms based on anecdotal evidence. It is easy and safe to take CBD in whichever form available you prefer.
Some of the benefits which CBD is reportedly able to bring include:
- Anti-seizure properties
- Anxiety relief
- Could help with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease
- Could help with heart health
- Depression relief
- Neuroprotective properties
- Pain relief
It should be emphasised, however, that while there is plenty of anecdotal evidence about CBD helping with health which can be found online, there is not enough medical evidence at the moment in order for it to be prescribed for any particular conditions. Some animal studies that have been conducted have demonstrated the potential for CBD to be used as an anti-inflammatory and as a way of relieving some symptoms of anxiety. However, this is yet to be proven in humans.
Is CBD legal in the UK?
CBD is legal in many countries including the UK, but there are certain rules in place about selling it here. The main one is that CBD products can be sold as long as their THC content is below 0.2%. This rule is in place mainly for reasons of safety. At iMeds, the CBD-infused products we sell contain below 0.2% of THC, so they are both legal and safe to buy and use.
Differences between CBD and THC
CBD and THC are compounds (cannabinoids) which can be found in the same plant, but the way they work in the body is very different.
The main difference is that THC causes psychoactive effects (known as getting “high”) if another of it is absorbed in the body in a short spell. Because of this effect and the potential risks that can create, it is currently illegal to sell THC products in the UK. CBD products which are legally sold in Britain are accepted because the THC content they contain is too small to create any adverse effects.
Can CBD get you high?
Some people may assume CBD can get you high like THC does because both of these compounds can be extracted from the same plant, but this is simply a myth. CBD on its own does not have the same psychoactive effects which THC has and it is in fact taken in a very safe way by many people today. A certain amount of caution is still recommended when using CBD products, but the THC content in them is so small that they are never likely to get you high.
CBD side effects
CBD very rarely causes any adverse effects, but there is nevertheless some possibility that it can cause side effects, particularly if you take more of it than officially recommended. When buying official CBD products, they will contain guidance on the maximum it’s considered ok to take each day. Some people have reported the following side effects when using CBD products:
- Dry mouth
- Feeling lightheaded
- Low blood pressure
You should consult your doctor or another health professional as soon as possible if you do experience side effects while taking CBD. While it could turn out to be a coincidence, a cautious approach is the safest.
For how long is CBD effective?
How long CBD stays in the body and influences it depends on numerous factors. These include the method of administration, how much exercise the person taking it is getting and how often they’ve taken CBD before.
Different methods can also get CBD into your system quickly or with more time required. Some of the fastest ways of getting CBD into your body include e-liquids and oils absorbed under the tongue. Edibles (CBD-infused food and drink products) can take a couple of hours to start taking effect but those effects can last a long time because the edible has to go through the digestive system. A lot of people who take CBD do not notice any difference when using it for the first time and only begin to notice its effects once they start using it regularly. This can take a few weeks.
