What is Malarone and what does it do?

Malarone is a medicine containing the two active ingredients atovaquone and proguanil. It is used to prevent and treat Malaria.

Malaria is a disease that spreads to humans via mosquitoes. The mosquitoes pass on the parasite by biting. When Malarone is taken to prevent Malaria, the active ingredients in the treatment kills off the parasites before they cause illness.

When is Malarone prescribed?

Malarone can be prescribed to prevent Malaria. It is primarily prescribed to patients travelling to Malaria risk areas. These areas include, but are not limited to large areas of Africa and Asia, Central and South America and parts of the Middle East.

No antimalarial treatment gives complete protection against Malaria, so it is important that you also take other preventative measures to decrease the risk as much as possible. Always use mosquito repellent and clothing to protect yourself and if possible a mosquito net at night.

To find our whether the country you are visiting belongs to any of the Malaria risk areas, visit the NHS Fit for Travel website.

Is Malarone suitable for my condition?

Our doctors will use the information you provide us through the medical questionnaire to determine whether this medicine is suitable for you to take. Malarone may not be suitable or prescribed if any of the following applies to you:

  • If you are allergic or sensitive to atovaquone, proguanil or any of the ingredients listed in the patient information leaflet.
  • If you have severe kidney disease.

Some medicines can affect how Malarone works. Always list any other medication you may take in the medical questionnaire. This will help our doctors determine the suitability of this medicine, and reduce the risk of side effects.

Medicines that can interact with Malarone include, but are not limited to metoclopramide, antibiotics (tetracycline, rifampicin and rifabutin), efavirenz, warfarin and etoposide.

What is the recommended dosage of Malarone?

You should follow the doctor’s instructions on how to take this medicine. The doses outlined below is for your reference only. The tablet should be taken with food or a milky drink where possible. Take the tablet at the same time every day.

Never exceed the stated dose.

Malarone doses for adults

The recommended dose for adults is 1 tablet once a day.

Start taking Malarone 1 to 2 days before travelling. Malarone needs to be taken throughout your stay. After your return to a malaria free area, keep taking Malarone for another 7 days before stopping.

Does Malarone cause any side effects?

Yes, just like all medicines Malarone may cause side effects. However, not everyone will get them. It is important that you read through the patient information leaflet before use so that you know how to recognise side effects and when to seek medical advice.

Common side effects from taking Malarone include (but are not limited to):

  • Headache.
  • Feeling or being sick (nausea and/or vomiting).
  • Stomach pain.
  • Diarrhoea.
  • Sleeping problems.
  • Loss of appetite.

Contact your GP or surgery immediately if you notice any signs of a severe allergic reaction.

Can I reduce the risk of getting side effects?

Yes. You should always read the patient information leaflet thoroughly before use as this can help reduce the risk of side effects and interactions between medicines. Below are a few things you can do:

  • While filling in the medical questionnaire, remember to include any other medicines you are taking. Malarone can affect how other medicines work, so it is important that you tell our doctors about all medicine you take. Don’t forget to also include over the counter medication and supplements.
  • Take Malarone with food or a milky drink to help your body absorb as much as possible of the medicine.
